ACNE PEELS – Shed off dead skin with chemicals and doctorsacne peels

JOHN ALEXANDER L. NICOLAS

Chemical peel is a treatment to improve skin texture on the face, or other areas, by applying chemicals to dry and peel out dead skin so that new skin can grow which is smooth and wrinkle-free.

Some chemical peels can be done by yourself or anyone who isn’t a doctor, if proper instructions come in the bottle. If not, you should talk to a dermatologist, or plastic surgeon. An Otolaryngologist, who specialises in ear, nose, neck, throat and head disorders, can also be consulted for chemical peel treatment.

There are several types of naturally occurring peels from various foods while others are chemically specific. Your skin problem (mild wrinkle to major pimples) and sensitivity will decide which treatment is best to get the right results.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are a mild form of chemical peel using acids found in milk, tomato juice and fruits that can deal with fine lines, mild wrinkles and acne problems. There are five main ones but here are a few that are most useful.

Citric Acid (found in lemons and Vitamin C fruit juice) is the simplest one but needs repeated use.
Lactic Acid (milk and blueberries) can remove dead skin cells with acne.

However, there may be some irritation and redness for a while and only continue the treatment if there is no irritation and if positive results are shown.

BETA HYDROXY ACID PEEL

Beta Hyrdoxy Acids (BHAs) is a stronger form of the AHA peel which works much deeper into the skin and reaches the pores faster. It can also remove dead skin cells and releases chemicals to control hormones that overproduce the oil that will form the acne.

BHAs are a common ingredient found in your basic over-the-counter acne medication. For a quicker result, a peel treatment can be requested with your doctor for better results.
While Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) chemical peel is not a high irritant, there is no food form to try at home so consult a doctor.

OTHERPEELS NOT JUST FOR ACNEacne peels

Chemical peels can be as strong enough to balance out skin color from laser treatment and remove continuous acne. Some peels include the Retinoic Acid Peel (which uses concentrated Vitamin A and carbon dioxide gas to kill skin cells) and Phenol Peels (which has acid properties to remove long-lasting damage).

These should not be considered unless your acne problem is severe for a long time and also because they are costly.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A PEEL TREATMENT

The skin is dried and then a water-like chemical (AHA or BHA) is applied slowly on the face. A warm, or stinging, or burning feeling will start, depending on your sensitivity.

After ten minutes, the peel is removed with cold water and dried out to remove all the dead skin removed from the washing. Depending on the ‘package’, you might get another cleansing treatment.

Your skin will look red, as if sunburned, which will go away in a few hours or days depending on the treatment strength. Doctors may give you some cleansers or lotions with sunscreen protection, as well as Vitamin A prescription to keep skin healthy while healing.

Acne Chemical Peel is specific to areas affected but if no results are shown with the recommended fruit juice treatment, consult a doctor and they can help to decide which treatment fits best to deal with your acne problem.
