Acne Rosacea – red in the face doesn’t mean you are angry

JOHN ALEXANDER L. NICOLAS

Acne can occur past puberty and into adulthood because of unbalanced hormones and a regime that makes you acne rosaceasweat a lot. However, there is one skin disease that can happen to adults over 30 years old which makes you red in the face, and not for bashful reasons.

Acne Rosacea (Roh-ZAY-sha) is a sometimes misunderstood condition likely because it looks similar to acne, but it is much worse. Acne Rosacea is the condition of inflamed cheeks, nose, chin, foreheads or eyelids.

Redness and swelling on these areas, with the addition of raised tiny blood vessels is a warning sign for the skin disease. Red bumps, small cysts and burning feelings will follow afterwards.

Acne Rosacea is sometimes mistaken for adult acne because small pimple-like bumps appear on the cheeks along with the redness. However, another sign for the disease is that they appear and disappear frequently.

Adults between 30 – 50 years old may have this condition if they you have fair skin and blush easily. Both sexes have this condition but because male hormones are a main factor in overproduction of oily secretion for bacteria on the face, more men have this problem.

Acne Rosacea is caused by sun overexposure, repeated heavy activities under hot weather, and spicy foods, hot drinks and alcohol. Stomach problems and medicines that cause blood vessels to widen are another minor cause.

A large combination of the above, plus sun damage can create further redness and triggers of a flare up will be the most concerning. Emotional factors like anger, embarrassment, stress, fear, anxiety are a few that can also show your red and bumpy face.

Acne Rosacea is more serious because the red bumps are not as easy to ‘squeeze’ as with the blackheads and white heads of normal acne. If you are able to do so, don’t do so because it will make it worse. Humid or cold weather that forces blood vessels to dilate to keep cool or warm will cause a flare up as well.

acne rosaceaAcne Rosacea can be serious if left untreated. You would have a large red nose and enlarged cheek due to the redness and swelling and tinier blood vessels deep under the skin will rise up. Soon, your eyes will feel irritated, burning and look bloodshot which will impair vision.

Doctors with previous cases can easily tell if you have this condition and a test of your skin sample will verify it.

There are different methods to lower the symptoms but there is no direct cure for Acne Rosacea. Avoid acne creams because the strong acid action will only irritate the skin more. Take prescribed oral antibiotic to kill any acne-causing bacteria and cortisone cream for to cool inflamed skin.

Avoid hot food and drinks, alcohols, smoking, or caffeine drinks that will increase the blood rate and widen blood vessels. Avoid strenuous activities in extreme hot and cold weather and cosmetics or skin lotions that will irritate the skin.

More importantly, emotions are what trigger the flare up which is connected to your heart rate. Avoid a stressed attitude of anger or anxiety and keep calm.

Red in the face can mean you are angry, but if you are red with blood vessels rising and enlarged nose and cheeks, it’s probably a skin disorder.
