Chest Acne – a little bump on the chest goes a long way
JOHN ALEXANDER L. NICOLAS
There are no clothes for our face and masks are not an everyday style to walk with. Non-facial acne is hidden by our clothes but it does not mean it is not a problem. One of the serious non-facial acne problems is chest acne which is what it says.
Chest acne covers the same problems as face acne but it can be much serious because it is on the chest. It starts as black and white heads leading to zits and pimples around the chest and shoulder areas. They can cover a wide area depending on bacteria levels and if age or hormones are a factor.
Some will say that it is genetic but it is just another acne outbreak caused by obvious reasons. It can happen during really hot weather. Like sebum oil and sweat that grows acne bacteria on the face, it is the same case for chest acne but more serious because there is not enough air with clothes on.
Sweating will clog up the pores and mix with the sebum oil to make it worse. Tight-fitted clothing does not allow your skin to ‘breathe’. No air means sweat does not evaporate and is trapped, plus tight clothing rubbing on the skin is irritating.
Another common cause for chest acne is by hormones. Teenagers suffer acne due to hormone changes and imbalances. The same is said for adults. In adults, more women have chest acne than men because women have more tendencies to have hormonal imbalance during their periods, pregnancy or menopause.
Medication to force hormone changes (health, fitness or lifestyle reasons) can also cause chest acne because of imbalance, particularly steroids or birth control pills.
Serious cases like Cystic Chest Acne are painful and sometimes leave deep scars which only happen if frequent sweating, poor bathing habits and irritating clothing or skin care products are combined. Of course, there are ways to combat Chest Acne.
Always take a shower after any activity where a lot of sweating happened to clean yourself of bacteria and oily skin. Use antibacterial soap and avoid fragrant ones that would irritate your skin. When it is hot out, wear loose fitting clothing or cotton-based ones to ‘breathe’ to allow air movement inside and sweat to evaporate.
Avoid some cosmetics and deodorants because they will only block the pores and make bacteria grow faster. If the deodorant is important, dry off excess with clean towels. Wash clothes thoroughly and avoid ‘fragrant’ soap detergents which can irritate the skin as well. Brands will tell you which ones to get, but it’s your decision.
Regarding creams and lotions, treat your chest acne like face acne which can be cleared by basic acne creams with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and other common acne ingredients. If they don’t work, a dermatologist is your best bet to get help to clear it up.
While chest acne is not as revealing as face acne, some people still feel dissuaded to reveal more than they should. Just remember that this is a common problem a lot of people have. If you see someone covering up their chest more than they should, then feel happy about it.
