Doxycycline

Doxycycline – Doxycycline (or Doryx in some brands) is another ‘family member’ of the tetracycline group of antibiotics normally used for strong skin infection and old to recent diseases like anthrax.

Acne lesions and rosacea-related problems are the serious cases when doxycycline needs to be used. It, like other tetracyclines, deals with acne bacteria by lowering the protein number it needs to live. It can lower the bacteria number and clear up some scarring, but it CANNOT help with skin reddening problems.

Doxycycline is also useful in gum disease, urinary tract infection and gonorrhoea.

It is important to get this from your doctor to get the right dosage (50 – 100mg) and if you have any other problems with liver or kidneys which are important for removing excess antibiotics which may be harmful.

Pregnant and nursing mothers should not use this antibiotic as it will create bone growth defects to the baby either in embryo or through breast milk. Children under eight are also restricted.

Side effects can include nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea. Take only if needed.
