Over-the-counter Acne Scar Treatment – no lasers required

JOHN ALEXANDER L. NICOLAS

When you feel like picking on dry skin that itches or popping that ugly pimple, you will end up getting scars that look like the skin was cracked by ice picks and reddened marks. Previously, we have written that mild to serious acne scarring can be treated with laser treatment (which ironically can cause scarring sometimes)

There are a few over-the-counter treatments for acne scars that can heal up those unsightly blemishes and replace those rough edges with smooth skin.Over-the-counter Acne Scar Treatment

Acnefree Pockmark Filler

The product uses a 4-pen system pack that can be carried around with your makeup kit. Its main ingredient is Hyaluronic Acid which is used to ‘plump’ the skin (create skin-colored layer) to cover up the mark while healing at the same time with the benzoyl peroxide addition.

You may have to use it frequently to get results and it is a slow treatment, so don’t rush it. The pack consists of a month’s worth of ‘Pockmark Filler’ (1 pen per week or two). However, it comes with a high fee but can soothe the skin while readily healing it which can cause irritation.

Over-the-counter Acne Scar TreatmentThe Big Four Ingredients

The big four ingredients to deal with acne scarring are standard in any acne medication: Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Sulphur and Resorcinal. Clearasil and Neutrogena products have a mixture of the four but its okay to try out any others with a few or just one.

Avoid high concentrations of Benzoyl Peroxide because the skin dries faster than it heals.

Clearasil Clearstick

Clearasil Clearstick has a main focus on removing dead skin cells with a moderate concentration of salicylic acid. It is useful for unclogging pores and makes the dead skin cells shed faster. If dirty skin cells stay on the skin, it is irritating and forces you to scratch and then scarring.

Clearasil Clearstick is more moderate in prices and is found in your everyday pharmacy but it only deals with half the problem of acne. Scars are all well and done but use another product for future acne breakouts. Moreover, if you’re still scratching, stop.

Mederma and Scar ZoneOver-the-counter Acne Scar Treatment

These are relatively new products but they have been used by the few that want to temporarily hide their reddened skin before the ‘party starts’. The goal is to decrease inflammation from the scarred areas and provide a smooth layer without any wrinkles or lines.

Pitted acne scars won’t be healed quickly but frequent use will prevent any new scars from forming. Reviewers have noted very little irritation but it varies with person. It can take a few weeks to work properly with different people but it gives a high promotion rate but with a high price.

Other Advice

You may also try some home remedies that deal with acne and scarring if price is cumbersome.

If you really want to avoid any medication altogether (besides the useful spot treatment), don’t do anything that will make you want to scratch your skin. Don’t touch it and don’t use any face puffs that itch more than they clean. Wash thoroughly as much as possible.
