Scalp acne – the worse place to get it if you itch
JOHN ALEXANDER L. NICOLAS
Acne can appear in any part of the body but mostly on the face. The glands that can overproduce the oily layer which traps acne bacteria is very dense on the head and face. Hair follicles will have these in large amounts to keep the hair smooth.
Hormone imbalance, poor hair hygiene, and irritating gels and shampoos can bring about an irritating form of acne. Scalp acne. When washing your hair with shampoo, scrubbing hard on the scalp helps remove dirt from the hair. Imagine the feeling when your scrubbing pops a pimple, or multiple pimples.
Other causes of acne are the same for the rest of the acne types but poor hair hygiene is a greater cause. Sebum oil will produce more to keep hair moist if too dry or remove dirt easier.
Like all acne types, the oily layer makes acne bacteria grow faster and white heads will lead to pimple deep on the scalp hidden by hair. Pustules can be found around the upper forehead (or higher)
While not as noticeable as face acne, it’s still a problem. It can be very painful especially when scrubbing or brushing hair. Scalp Follicullitis is a mild form of scalp acne which is shown by small red bumps with a few white heads.
If these bumps are more close together with more pimples and inflamed skin, you have Acne Necrotica Milaris, which is what happens when you don’t take care of your scalp.
Like all acne-types, there are treatments and advice on dos and don’ts. Avoid any hair gels, mousse, fragrant shampoos or conditioners that will irritate the skin and use medicated shampoo. Mild shampoos will contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid (basic important acne killers) to help kill the acne bacteria.
More importantly, lather-rinse-repeat with healthy determination to clean your hair and remove all the dirt. Avoid any treatments (color, straightening, etc.) until the acne clears up and allow your to flow more freely.
For men, short hair lets you see where the problem is but because your head has more contact with the sun, you may sweat more.
There are some medicines that doctors prescribe for serious scalp acne. Oral antibiotics or steroids will control hormones and decrease growth of acne bacteria but only if Necrotica Milaris is very serious.
Other acne prevention diets associated with face acne is also useful in scalp acne prevention but personal hair hygiene works the best.
